How will ETIAS change travel to Europe?

Practically, the new ETIAS visa waiver program is a pre-travel screening process in which applicants submit some personal and background information as well as answer security questions to be preapproved for travel to Portugal or other Schengen countries. It will be used by millions of American citizens and international travelers from 60 countries exempted from visas to travel to Schengen. The application will be reviewed by border officials who will verify it against the most recent European security databases. If everything is in order, applicants will be emailed their approval to enter Schengen. This usually happens within 24 hours. The online ETIAS application process should take at least 96 hours (4 day) to complete. This will allow applicants to resolve any issues during the application process. The entire process will be paperless and extremely efficient. It is intended to improve the traveler experience as well as increase security at international borders.

This new system of travel authorization was first established by the European Commission in 2016. This system was created by the European Commission in 2016 to reduce terrorist threats and transnational security concerns. Travelers will also be able to benefit from the new ETIAS travel authorization program. It requires less paperwork, is quicker and takes less time. Foreign tourists should find it much easier to travel to Schengen countries, including San Marino, Vatican City and Bulgaria. The Schengen area’s border security policy update is a great example of the country’s determination to improve its internal security. It also prioritizes the needs of international tourists, who are and will continue to be highly valued by the European tourism sector.

Does one need an ETIAS visa waiver to travel to Portugal?

Anyone traveling to Portugal from the US or another visa-exempt country to Schengen will need to apply for preauthorization through the ETIAS visa waiver program. The online application process for US citizens is very simple. A simple biometric passport and a valid email will allow travelers to apply for ETIAS. The authorization is valid for three years. Travelers must apply again for the authorization only if their passport expires. The ETIAS visa waiver can be used only in conjunction with the travel document.
The Schengen Agreement is not applicable to countries outside of Europe. Only Schengen countries and San Marino, Vatican City as well as Romania, Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus will require the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Not all Schengen countries are members of the EU. In the same way, not all EU countries are part of Schengen. ETIAS authorizations are not required for Ireland, which is not part Schengen. However, American citizens who travel to Norway or Switzerland will need an ETIAS authorization. This is because Norway and Switzerland are both part of the Schengen region, even though they are not part of the EU.

CITIZENS OF VISA-EXEMPT COUNTRIES

ETIAS will be required by all citizens of 60 visa-exempt countries to travel to Portugal and any other Schengen country starting in 2025. This includes Australia, Brazil, the USA, Canada, Brazil, and many other countries. ETIAS visa waiver allows American citizens to travel to Schengen without the need to apply for a Schengen visa. To enter the Schengen region, international travelers need only a passport with biometrics. Citizens of visa-exempt countries will need to submit an online application for ETIAS visa waiver starting in 2025.

SHORT-TERM TRAVELERS (UP TO 90 DAYS)

A foreign visitor cannot stay in Portugal or other Schengen countries for more than 90 consecutive days without an ETIAS travel authorization. A person who plans to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days or to study or work in Portugal will need to apply through the local consulate for the appropriate visa.

CHILDREN & MINORS

ETIAS visa waiver requirements don’t consider age. Border officials will ask for proof that both children and adults have submitted electronic ETIAS visa waiver applications. A parent or guardian must submit an application on behalf of the minor. Before you leave, ensure your child has submitted an ETIAS visa waiver online form at least 96 hours (4 Days) prior to departure.

How to apply for an ETIAS Visa Waiver to Travel to Portugal From the US

You will not encounter any difficulties filling out the electronic ETIAS form. The entire process should take less than 10 minutes. The required information includes your current passport information, full legal names, date of birth, citizenship details, as well as contact information like email, physical address, phone number, and physical address. Additional information such as your education, criminal history, and travel history will be required. Online ETIAS applications are usually very simple in most cases. Within 24 hours of submitting an online application, most foreign applicants will receive an electronic response. ETIAS agents may request additional information if an applicant’s application seems suspicious or not in order. Rarely, border agents may have to interview you personally to make their final decision. An ETIAS travel permit is not a guarantee of entry to Portugal or other Schengen countries. In all cases, the Portuguese border officials at the port of entry will be the final authority. Agents at the port might also ask for additional information about your travels. Agents at the port may also request proof of hotel reservations and return flights, sufficient funds to pay for your stay in Portugal, and a guarantee that you have adequate medical insurance coverage.

All ETIAS online applications require documentation

A valid passport that has biometric capabilities is required in most cases to submit an online ETIAS application. The United States has offered biometric passports to its citizens since 2006. Check if your American passport is biometric by looking for the camera symbol at the bottom of the front cover. This rectangular symbol has a horizontal line that runs through it and a small circle in the center.
Your passport or travel document must contain the following:

  • A printed photograph cannot be glued or affixed to the page.
  • Machine readability;
  • A digital passport chip

If your passport or travel document does not meet the requirements, border officials might ask for additional documentation. This information is usually required before they process your electronic ETIAS visa waiver application.
